Research suggests a direct link between deep sleep and the ageing process.

Not getting enough deep sleep may speed up the ageing process, a study has suggested.

A lack of deep or "slow wave" sleep might contribute to common effects of old age such as increased body fat, researchers from the University of Chicago said.

The study appears to establish a link between reduced amounts of deep sleep and a decline in human hormone growth secretion.

Dr Esra Tasali of the university's medical school said her team believe that their study provides the first evidence that lower levels of deep sleep can cause the decline in growth hormone secretion.

The research was acclaimed by Dr Martica Hall, a sleep and ageing specialist from the University of Pittsburgh, who said: "We've suspected for a while that reducing slow-wave sleep has physiological effects.

"But this data actually shows this is the case, so it's quite exciting."

Last week, the website foodproductdesign.com reported the findings of a separate study conducted by researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina and Arizona State University in the US, which suggested that diets high in cholesterol and saturated fat can contribute to memory loss.
